Main article: List of Metal Gear characters § Introduced in Metal Gear Solid After completing all 30 stages, a survival mission is unlocked in which the player must sneak their way through ten consecutive stages under a seven-minute limit. This mode is divided into three main categories (practice, time attack, and gun shooting), each consisting of ten stages. In addition to the main story, there is also a VR training mode in which the player can test out their sneaking skills in a series of artificially constructed environments. The Codec is also used to provide exposition on the game's backstory. Play controls and strategies can also be accessed via the Codec radio, where advice is delivered from Snake's support team for example, the support team may chastise Snake for not saving his progress often enough, or explain his combat moves in terms of which buttons to press on the gamepad. To progress, players must discover the weaknesses of each boss and defeat them. Progress is punctuated by cutscenes and codec, as well as encounters with bosses. The player can also use the first-person view while remaining idle to look around Snake's surroundings and see what's ahead of him. However, the camera angle will change during certain situations, such as a corner view when Snake flattens himself to a wall next to an open space, or into first-person when crawling under tight spaces or when equipping certain items such as the binoculars or a sniper rifle. ![]() ĭespite the switch to 3D, the game is still played primarily from an overhead perspective similar to the original 2D Metal Gear games. The emphasis on stealth promotes a less violent form of gameplay, as fights against large groups of enemies will often result in severe damage to Snake. Snake can also make use of many items and gadgets, such as infra-red goggles and a cardboard box disguise. An on-screen radar provides the player with the location of nearby enemies and their field of vision. To remain undetected, the player can perform techniques which make use of Snake's abilities and the environment, such as crawling under objects, using boxes as cover, ducking or hiding around walls, and making noise to distract enemies. When Snake leans on a corner, the camera shifts to his front for dramatic effect and to enable sight down corridors. Solid Snake hiding from a guard, behind an M1 Abrams main battle tank. ![]() Who hasn’t played this? Who wouldn’t want to, after seeing others? This point-and-shoot masterpiece was an instant hit when it came out and with good reason. Despite its very dated graphics, the sound effects and theme music were brilliantly memorable, as were the various moves and combos each player could pull off. Word of advice, though if you think you’re really good just because you’ve completed the campaigns and beaten hardest AI 1 on 1 and buy the game for a multiplayer experience, prepare to have your medieval behind handed to you.ħ: WWF: Wrestlemania – Acclaim/Sculptured Software, 1995Ī staple for 90’s kids, this brilliant little number featured eight of the most famous wrestlers of the 90’s, exciting and often hilariously comical gameplay (including a plethora of glitches) and the incredible experience of either winning the Co-op mode with your friend or bashing his face in in the Versus variant. A massive array of units also helped the game become extremely complex with a nearly endless learning curve that was still lenient on casual players. With state-of-the-art graphics and a masterfully envisioned user interface, the game had an incredible set of campaigns as well as one of the best multiplayer experiences any RTS has ever offered. Although the immediate sequel was far more popular, this was the foundation on which one of the most popular RTS games of all time was built. That may not be much of a compliment for a dry niche in an otherwise oversaturated genre, but for its time this was truly a masterpiece. Released at the end of ’98 with the ’99 world cup looming ahead, this is a game that’s still considered by most to be the best cricket game ever made.
